This is our second year to connect with CSA members at the Pembroke Kids Child Development Center in Avon Lake. The directors Andrea and Steve Caris have planted a garden beside the playground as a learning experience. The garden has a wide variety of vegetables and herbs in raised beds. Students are seeing first hand how food grows. Steve and Andrea have green thumbs and we are happy to offer any suggestions we can. This year the garden is looking very lush under the tender loving care it is given. They are beginning to harvest and had their first eggplant this week. The students started the basil plants in class and now parents can ask for fresh picked basil to take home. They are excited to watch the spaghetti squash grow.

We are happy to have two Ohio Honey bee hives on our farm this year. The hives are owned by Lucy and Charlie Wellhausen. You might see them every Saturday at the North Union Farmers' Market at Shaker Square Market.

We are happy to keep a watch on the hives and have learned a lot. We noticed that the bees were piling up at the entrance to the hive. Lucy explained that the bees were actually fanning the air to cool the hive in the heat. She says they sometime just like to hangout on the front porch. I said if that's true then there is a block party going on.

Charlie comes to check on the hive every few weeks and asks that we watch for bees around the farm. They have certainly found my sunflowers and the new squash blossoms.
